If you are not aware of the new effort to control our schools and take decisions about k-12 curriculum out of the hands of local parents and educators, you need to learn about the new Common Core Curriculum.  There are plenty of websites online and here is one of them:

(Florence to Marc)

I was referring to the 400 points of data that some people are saying are being collected on each student.  Our Education Department said they are not collecting personal data on students - only educational information which will be used without being connected to student names.  The corestandards.org site says, "Implementing the Common Core State Standards does not require data collection." Politifact states, "Our research found that Common Core does not include a data collection component."  The U S. Department of Education stated, "The data is being used to assess the effectiveness of educational programs, not to track individual students."  Yet there are people who are going around getting parents all concerned that schools are collecting information about if they have guns or are Republicans, etc.  I have been challenging people to tell me one state where they are collecting personal data, since this is one of the things that is being passed around to alarm parents about Common Core.  No one has been able to tell me any state in which this is happening,  (One person did tell me one state, but when I checked it out their claim was false.)

What a crock of crap! State standards were completely adequate. Raising the stakes two to three years won't fix drug babies, the huge numbers of SPED kida, enormous numbers of students who speak Spanish 90 percent of the time and lack language skills, and those children who come from single parent welfare homes where they are NOT prepared for school! Quit blaming the vast social ills on schools and teachers and start a program that teaches parents about THEIR reaponsibility to prepare their children for school, expect success and keep them out of gangs. When you separate out these demographics, American kids will compete successfully against any county in the world. Read David Berliner's "The Maufactured Crisis" if you really want to understand education today.

Florence to Rebecca:

The governors were finding that students needed remediation before they were able to go on to college or able to go into the workplace.  They felt that students needed a higher set of standards.  Many of the previous standards had a gap between what students were able to do at the end of high school and what they needed to do in college.  The Common Core Standards have an overlap between the high school standards and the college standards.  Many of the older standards were created from kindergarten up and ended up with a gap between high school and college.  The Common Core Standards started with what was needed to know in college and the workplace and each year works toward those goals.

I would like to think that I am carrying the water for my students and other American students not the government or Bill Gates.  These standards should be very helpful to American students especially those who are currently in a disadvantaged educational environment.  I feel that most of the people who  are fighting against them have never read them and have believed a lot of misinformation.  I think most of the misinformation goes back to the article "Controlling Education from the Top" by Jane Robbins and Emmett McGroarty.  There are at least 30 items of misinformation in that article and they continue to be recycled in other articles.

My reading of history convinces me that most bad government results from too much government.
