My expecting girlfriend and I arrived early for the appointment, so we waited outside breathing in the fresh morning air. She seemed tense, testy even, as she made sour comments about my shirt, my smoking habit, my mother. Silently I listened to her rebuke, for I had heard it all before.
A bug scampered across the sidewalk and I squished it out of existence, glad to rid this world of yet another crawly pest.
“Why did you do that? she scolded. “It was just an innocent little thing probably hunting food for its family. You didn’t have to kill it. How would you like someone to step on you? This planet has no respect for sustainability or for leaving creatures alone as they evolve in harmony with the environment. I just don’t get you people.”
I had it coming.
And she was right.
We humans need to be more serious about what the Bible says is our “dominion over the animals.”
I hung my head as we three moved toward the just-opened doors of Planned Parenthood . . .
