Its surprising how much you can accomplish if you don't care who gets the credit
This morning, Obama and the Prime Minister of Sweden had a joint press conference. In true Obama form, each question directed to Obama elicited a 15 minute response. A lot of what was said was the usual prattle because Obama did not have a teleprompter.
The most interesting thing Obama said was in response to the stroll around the White House lawn and why he changed his mind about going to Congress: "I've been thinking about this for a long time. I don't need the approval of Congress but I thought, why not go to Congress? We need to get out of the habit of saying, 'let the President stretch the boundaries.' So Congress needs to act."
And the truly stunning answer was on the red line comment from 13 months ago: Question: What about your position of setting a red line and how will that affect the Syrian Crisis? Answer: "I didn't set a red line. The world set a red line with a treaty that the world will not sit still for the use of chemicals on innocent people. Congress set the red line when it ratified that treaty. [Editor: remember, that Congress was 60 years ago] We have to act because if we don't we are effectively saying we are not someone who is shamed by these resolutions. We will be stronger if the President and Congress act together. It's Congress' and the international countries' credibility that is on the line, not mine."
Really, he said that!!! But we know he was not only quite clear in his "red line" comment, he was quite emphatic about that at the time he said it. He "didn't just make that up about the red line, I didn't just pluck that out of thin air." This is how he has re-framed the argument. Blame someone else. Obama is not great at much but he is enormously great at finding ways to blame someone else for what he's done and then lie, lie, lie about it. He seems to have further boxed himself in once again. Oh, what tangled webs we weave when first we practice to deceive! Obama needs no more practice. He's got it down pat!
So now the question is, who in the world will actually believe that? We know they will spin it to protect Obama from his own idiocy, but what will they say in print?
Side note: Assad's Defense Minister along with several key Generals have defected to Turkey.
