Scientists at UC Santa Barbara have developed a quantum computer capable of factoring small prime numbers. When scaled up to handle numbers that are hundreds of digits long -- as the U.S. government is working on -- this technology will crack all existing encryption in mere seconds.
Some physicists say "quantum computing" functions in an infinite number of parallel universes, turning the cosmos into a "computational multiverse computer" that can break any known encryption.
