Its surprising how much you can accomplish if you don't care who gets the credit
Even though this is an opinion piece, this may be by far the scariest list of government agencies designed to spy on and control us you will ever read in one article. Yes, you will say you knew about this one or that one but few who read this will be aware of the magnitude of control we are under.
Authored by John Whitehead via The Rutherford Institute,
When a population becomes distracted by trivia, when cultural life is redefined as a perpetual round of entertainments, when serious public conversation becomes a form of baby-talk, when, in short, a people become an audience and their public business a vaudeville act, then a nation finds itself at risk; a culture-death is a clear possibility.”
- Professor Neil Postman, Amusing Ourselves to Death: Discourse in the Age of Show Business
What characterizes American government today is not so much dysfunctional politics as it is ruthlessly contrived governance carried out behind the entertaining, distracting and disingenuous curtain of political theater. And what political theater it is, diabolically Shakespearean at times, full of sound and fury, yet in the end, signifying nothing.
Played out on the national stage and eagerly broadcast to a captive audience by media sponsors, this farcical exercise in political theater can, at times, seem riveting, life-changing and suspenseful, even for those who know better.
Week after week, the script changes (Donald Trump’s Tweets, Congress’ hearings on Robert Mueller’s Russia probe, the military’s endless war drums, the ever-widening field of candidates for the 2020 presidential race, etc.) with each new script following on the heels of the last, never any let-up, never any relief from the constant melodrama.
The players come and go, the protagonists and antagonists trade places, and the audience members are quick to forget past mistakes and move on to the next spectacle.
All the while, a different kind of drama is unfolding in the dark backstage, hidden from view by the heavy curtain, the elaborate stage sets, colored lights and parading actors.
Such that it is, the realm of political theater with all of its drama, vitriol and scripted theatrics is what passes for “transparent” government today, with elected officials, entrusted to act in the best interests of their constituents, routinely performing for their audiences and playing up to the cameras, while doing very little to move the country forward.
Yet behind the footlights, those who really run the show are putting into place policies which erode our freedoms and undermine our attempts at contributing to the workings of our government, leaving us none the wiser and bereft of any opportunity to voice our discontent or engage in any kind of discourse until it’s too late.
It’s the oldest con game in the books, the magician’s sleight of hand that keeps you focused on the shell game in front of you while your wallet is being picked clean by ruffians in your midst.

Good opinion he has.
Spot on! Somebody else gets it.
This is the proper illustration of what is happening to our Constitutional Republic. We are the serfs amongst the kings and queens who rule over us making us their slaves.
The ending says it all ..."We have moved beyond the era of representative government and entered a new age.
You can call it the age of authoritarianism. Or fascism. Or oligarchy. Or the American police state.
Whatever label you want to put on it, the end result is the same: tyranny". Our laws are being used against us to make us all indentured servants of the bureaucrats.
There is nothing new here. It's been growing steadily and commented on repeatedly. My question is an age old one: What in hell can we DO about it?????
Down through history, the pasttern has been repeating. Freedom has been fought for, sometimes won, then immediately the "deep state" of that time period begins its surreptitious motions to begin the cycle all over again. We never seem to learn. At this time, the educational system has been fully taken over. Our younger generations are easily "won over" with whatever the latest gambits seem to be. Young minds, easily manipulated by false information and slogans. Whole cities taken over and corrupted. A technical industry now invested in the Deep State.
And accusations of a "police state"? Try running things without police forces!
And now, a totally corrupt Congress, hell bent on inviting into our shores a world wide group of people who have already condemned us and are pledged to either enslave or kill us all. Gee! What great choices!!!
Answers? Haven't they all been tried? The worst of our being always seems to rise to the top.
Police do not have to be part of what is meant when we use the term "police state". The police have been co-opted as partners of a burgeoning oligard invested gov't state that is corrupt and moving rapidly towards authoritarian style and that means loss of liberty and that spells tyranny.
I have no magic bullet to suggest to stop this mad rush. We the people the best antidote.
I like John Whitehead ...... BUT ..... he tends to over-dramatize. He believes that the course of the U.S. is the same under Trump as it was under Obama. How many of You believe that.
Don't misunderstand me, I support John Whitehead; he does allot of great work defending people from government overreach and misdeeds, and he needs to continue his good work, but he also needs to recognize the better direction the country is taking under President Trump. It's not perfect .... nor will it ever be ..... but it's much better than under several of the previous Presidents.
I believe it and here is why: The progressives have doubled down on their agenda. They are keeping our border open, they still control the central banks, the deep state is alive and well in the WH, DOJ, CIA, the courts are still radical, Homeland Sec and Ed are a major mess, etc. The Mueller report proves that is true, styled to get a rise out of the progressive marxists. That struggle has yet to be decided and when and if it is, then we know where our country will be going. I think White is committed to sound the alarm so we don't get lazy until the job is done.
The course of the U.S. is the same under Trump as it was under Obama. How many of You believe that.
I do. All trump is done is raise more money. For me, real change involves repealing amendments. Until a president starts to repeal amendments. Nothing has changed
If that is all you think the President has accomplished while under heavy fire from the left, you've gone to sleep.
Trump has done mighty things in his two + years and against the list of those in my earlier post. You and others are expecting him to move mountains over nasty democrats piled up in front of him. But according to the law and the Constitution, there are limits of what any president can do without the help of Congress and he got no help from either party. All Trump has done is raise money is very short sighted but I hear it does take a lot of money to win a presidential race, this coming election more than any other. So maybe you don't want him to spend any time prepping for 2020. Sounds like a dumb plan to me.
That is a good comment.
Marc, My understanding is that repeals of amendments are accomplished in Congress. The executive can request an amendment change, obviously may not get from the Congress. As with the call/pleas from current President for changes to existing immigration law, not extensive and small number of changes, the pleas go unfulfilled (and the changes much needed). So what does the non performing Congress do, they twiddle their fingers and do so for political theater, goals by some fo open borders and take wishes from special interest which means $$'s for them. Congress has advocated their responsibility and I know you know that.
Yes in this regard same scenario under Trump. Raising money that is always an issue for many decades. So same for Trump. Raise money for re-election or die on the vine. Can wish it to be different will not make this fact change.
I have always viewed EO's purposes as directions from the executive to the unelected bureaucrats. EO's have turned into a way to get around the do nothing congress, carry out progressive socialist agendas as Obama did, beginning the thought their used in present times to also move our gov't type to parliamentary type, bye Republic.
